Visualizing the Unseen

postcard with stylized ink drawing of woman with wings

Bulletin from the margins of modernism: twentieth-century art blanked our ability to see and understand ornament as a means of visual knowledge production. We’ve consequently lost sight of a remarkable group women working in the slums of fin-de-siècle Edinburgh to transform urban living and social relationships through art and design. Inspired by traditional Celtic ornament but infused with modern art nouveau, their black-and-white designs interlaced past and future, spirit and matter, individual and community, in the borders of the Scottish Renascence magazine The Evergreen: A Northern Seasonal (1894-1896/7). It’s time to look again: Nellie Baxter. Helen Hay. Anne Mackie. Marion Mason. Effie Ramsay.
